LOINCLOTH
Iron Balls of Steel LP

Loincloth consists of (former) members from Confessor, Kenmores and Breadwinner with to goal to create instrumental prog/doom metal without any vocals, acoustic parts, no pointless guitar leads and no repetition. An interesting approach if you ask me, so let’s have a closer look whether they managed to deliver on their debut album, entitled Iron Balls Of Steel…

The phrase “All killer and no filler” comes into mind when listening to Iron Balls Of Steel. The album consists of 16(!) rather short instrumental tracks which hit the listener with the proverbial sledgehammer, while retaining the sort of musical sophistication in the best progressive rock/metal tradition. Try to imagine a fully stripped Intronaut or Mastodon and you’ll get a pretty solid idea of what you can expect from Loincloth.

Iron Balls Of Steel isn’t a pretty record. It’s massive and raw and it has more staying power than Soilent Green and Crowbar combined. This album is graced with a massive production which perfectly underscores the uncompromising nature and attitude of this band. Very becoming indeed! -- "Alternative Matter"

Tennis System likes noise. It likes it so much that at this year's SXSW, the local Austin cops shut down two of its shows due to noise complaints. Via two guitars creating a reverb whirlwind, roaring drums and a droning bass, they will flatten you with their sound, and dig you out from underneath the pile along with their buried shoegaze melodies. The noisy, earnest legacy of Sonic Youth, My Bloody Valentine, and the Jesus and Mary Chain lives on in the expansive, catchy-as-hell pop songs of Tennis System.

EAST OF THE WALL

Exploratory New Jersey-born prog-metal peddlers EAST OF THE WALL are preparing to drop their third full-length slab of methodologically unique output, The Apologist, this Autumn. Longtime followers of this act, and the numerous related current or previous acts leading up to this recording — including but definitely not limited to The Postman Syndrome, Day Without Dawn, El Drugstore, Argonauts — have been awaiting this release for some time.

The piercing feedback leads into an elephant-sized sludge metal riff on the album’s opener, “Naif”. One might hypothesize (as I did) that the rest of the track will be a sludgy beast. Well shame on you and me! “Naif” soon undergoes a drastic stylistic change that will leave the listener wondering what had just happened. From Sludge, to post-rock, back to sludge, than to an almost alternative/progressive rock feel to the end. Adding huge contrasting sections to a single song is East of the Wall’s specialty (“False Build” is a perfect example of this). “Naif” flawlessly flows into “Linear Failure” which features one of the most gorgeous, jazz oriented guitar sections I have ever heard. You just have to hear it to believe it. But that is just one section of the song because once again, the band surprises you with flawlessly switching to a completely different section without sounding forced. One might criticize it for sounding “random”, but this is not the case. These shape-shifting entities called “East of the Wall songs” sound completely organic and are performed with such virtuosic skill that is makes the whole song flow very well.

Physicists deal in quantum probabilities. Wizards wrestle with magic. OS OVNI dream synthesizers. Emerging from the more idiosyncratic side of reality, the duo of Logan Owlbeemoth and Omebi Velouria build minimal sonic structures around time travel pop hooks using warm synths, simple effected vocals, colorful costumes set in a 2070's celluloid film setting and visual projections made of hyper changing colorful pixel bits in the ...shape of UFOs, cats and hearts. Their sound is both accessible and charmingly home brewed. As the collision of rebellious oscillations and layered harmonics clash and hum, it seems that their music is trying to pry open a gateway to its own science fictional universe. The shimmering gateway opens, and what you find when you look inside is OS OVNI.

But Prizehog infuse their low end assault with all manner of druggy psychedelia, warped doom pop and blurred blissed out slow-core, conjuring up a sound that pounds and pummels, drift and shimmers, grinds and churns, slipping effortlessly from bombastic Melvinsy howl and chug, to a super hooky heaviness, that reminds us of the warped Buttholes beholden noisepop of Prizehog pals Wildildlife, from a sort of bluesy, blissed out tarpit ZZ Top swing and swagger, to a dark and dolorous black hole heavy slowcore a la Codeine or True Widow, often all wound up into a single song.

Siphon some fumes from the American Primitive guitar meanderings of John Fahey, the kitchen-sink folk of Califone, the boozy, Southern gothic literacy of James McMurtry, the populist guitar fireworks of Dean Ween, and the decadent noise of the Jesus & Mary Chain and you’ll have a heady ether somewhat akin to that which Stephen Brower & the Silent Majority are trying to project.

Following news of the cancellation of this year's Sunset Junction music festival, 400 Blows and The Butthole Surfers have moved Saturday's upcoming Los Angeles show to popular local venue The Echoplex.

Recently named "Best Album of the Month" by Vice Magazine, 400 Blows will be celebrating the release of "Sickness and Health" with a daytime party this Saturday at Vacation Vinyl. We've got some awesome guest DJs including Chuck Dukowski (Black Flag, Black Face, Sextet), Gabe Serbian (The Locust, Retox, Year Future, Le Butcherettes), Joey Karam (One Day as a Lion, The Locust) and Zane (Killing Spree). Later in the night, LA industrialists Bestial Mouths will perform in the store for the LP release of their DAIS Records album "Hissing Veil" on LP. The record is 40 minutes of intense gloom. A meditation on the relationship between transgressor and victim conceived in a flurry of automatic writing, Hissing Veil is an urgent declaration revealed in a barrage of primitive rhythms and feral calls.

Two heavy and blown out bands are going to tear the shop apart Sunday and they'll be playing a show later that night at Bordello downtown (901 E. 1st st)

Milk Music (above) will open with their Wipers/Dinosaur Jr./Husker Du-zoned meltdown, and The Men (below) are going to finish it out from a similar headspace but in a lo-fi and confusing Kraut-meets-hardcore fuzz wall which is somehow just good ol' rock-n-roll. It doesn't necessarily make sense but it sounds good so it doesn't need to be understood.

Cinder Cone, a two-piece minimalist rock outfit from Los Angeles, emit a thunderous sound. Anyone can attest to this if they have attended a Cinder Cone show, listened to the band’s releases, or even heard a rumbling somewhere near a downtown practice space on the banks of the great LA River. Only two members comprise the band: David plays a drum set and Anthony plays a guitar while vocalizing into a microphone. They do not use keyboards, laptops, or any other technical wizardry to create their sound. If you hear it on the record, they can do it live. Their full sound of octopus drumming and innovative fretwork weave together to place the listener on a propulsive freeway one minute only to drop them off in a placid field the next, capping off the journey with an earthquake of drum rolls and precisely controlled feedback.

We've been banging our head against the wall for months now trying to verbalize what this albums means to us and to the world we work within. We continue to find it a conundrum on every level, a Rubik's cube of sorts, that is helping us to challenge so much of how we think and feel about music, life, relationships and the business that has brought it all together. Our therapist now even has a copy.

Dominick Fernow has been delivering genre defining noise/experimental/electronic releases as Prurient (and via his slew of other bands/collaborations, including Cold Cave, Ash Pool and others) for nearly a decade and a half, many on his own NYC based Hospital Productions. Revered in many circles, and often loathed within them as well, he's cultivated and curated a tastemaking-ly obsessive worldwide following of like minded folks. The beautiful irony is that it is these very folks that will no doubt be most challenged by what Bermuda Drain represents.

On these nine tracks, we can clearly hear the echoes of Prurient's howling past, but are also faced with something perhaps even more unsettling - that being the territory of the unknown present and its indication of possible futures. The album, both in content and sound, is at once violent, magnetic, abrasive and emotional. The more we listen the deeper we fall into it, taking what has been provided and using it as a tool for our own self reflection.

If the true idea of noise is perpetual freedom, then Bermuda Drain may well be the genre's most profoundly challenging record since Merzbow went laptop. Bermuda Drain is a boldly melodic, beat based synth record, complete with the very verse/chorus/bridge structures that the community so often defines it self by eschewing. The Prurient of today is more truly in line with the original spirit of noise than ever before. We give it two years before there is a collaboration with Trent Reznor.

I first started Sudden Death Records in 1978, as a way to put out the first DOA record, the 7" EP "Disco Sucks". Helms Alee’s sophomore album, Weatherhead, could turn any cultural critic into a historical revisionist. Let’s pull the buckshot back through the maw of a 20th century icon. Let’s
reassemble the bloody mess and set a disenfranchised young man on a different trajectory, one devoid of celebrity and tragedy. Let’s re-envision the last twenty years. The other crucial variables can remain in place—hair metal still choked on its own excess, the beguiling mixed-gender vocal harmonies and alternating jangle and clang of The Pixies
still seduced college radio, the antagonistic sludge of The Melvins continued to rumble across the globe, and the orchestrated discord of Sonic Youth still proved noise could hold artistic merit. But punk never broke, never became acliché . Do you buy into Tolstoy’s belief that the individual is a mere pawn in history’s master plan? Would the lineage of rock music have found another reluctant voice of a generation? Much as Tolstoy suspected that a stillborn Napoleon would not have prevented another hegemonic ruler from sweeping across Europe, the tastes and tides of public demand would’ve most likely elevated another unglamorous tortured artist into the limelight. But
it’s still tempting to think of a parallel universe where the idiosyncratic marriage of wounded pop music and wrathful dissonant rock never found a footing in the mainstream world. It’s a dream not born out of a disdain for the pairing of the opposing musical tactics of brawn and sophistication, but the disappointment that the balancing act is so
commonly butchered by popular artists. These men, lacking vision, have turned it into a cheap formula. In the alternate reality, a band like Helms Alee reigns above all. Here, no one seeks to tame guitar squall to fit in a radio format or, inversely, needlessly dirty up a good hook to provide an air of authenticity. Here, HelmsAlee’s balance is the archetype—masterful and enthralling.

Given the history of the last two decades and the deepening sense that melody and muscle compromise one another, Weatherhead becomes heroic. It’s not just gallant in intent, but in sound. Granted, heroism is subjective; listeners are bound to have their own preferred reverberations to conjure an inspired rallying cry. But Helms Alee’s gamut of timbres--from the most guttural blown-out roar to the most graceful lilting melody- -summon a sense of triumph, empowerment, and conquest. The relentless chugging fuzz and vocal harmonies of “Elbow Grease”, the concrete thrust of the central riff of “8/16”, the thunderstruck arpeggio of “Pretty As Pie”, the siren song of “Pig Pile”, the unbridledscuzz of “Ripper No Lube”, and the alternating agit-punk and anthemic approach of the title track all reinforces Helms Alee’s position as masters of diametrically opposed tactics. They are the true heroes and heroines of the loud-quiet-loud.

Weatherhead was recorded by Matt Bayles at Studio Litho and Red Room Studios in the Winter of 2010-2011. Helms Alee are currently scheduled to hit the road with label mates Torche and Big Business in June 2011. Bear witnesses to the path that never saw fame and fortune taint the beguiling rumble and bow to the throne of HelmsAlee.

Over the last two years Tearist has become one of the most notorious and vital bands in the new underground pulsing through Los Angeles. Building on songs driven by intense vocals and synths, the duo’s performances are known for being deeply physical and direct events. Yasmine Kittles sings from the depths of her body/soul and moves in a near-transfixed state, using scrap metals to scrape rhythm from the ground beneath her. All the while, as if telepathically linked, William Stangeland uses sputtering, cracked synthesizers to create shimmering melodic lines along rumbling interlocked beats and rhythms. Their songs flow and surge, building thick layers of analog sound and noise, often leaving wrecked PA’s in their wake.

San Francisco based post-black metalers, DEAFHEAVEN (Deathwish Inc) will also be performing a full set at this all ages event. There will be a very limited number of hand screened prints available to the first people at the event, courtesy of Shirts and Destroy. THE FUNERAL PYRE are supporting last year’s “Vultures at Dawn,” (Prosthetic Records) which was just released on vinyl on February 1^st.

Book tour is based on panel curated by rock journalist RJ Smith (Spin, New York Times) for the Experience Music Project Pop Conference at UCLA.

Together they have made and lost more money than most, and will reveal strategies for doing both with flair. (RJ Smith)

Cheetah Chrome - A Dead Boy's Tale From The Front Lines Of Punk Rock is the no-holds-barred autobiography of Cheetah Chrome, lead guitarist of the Dead Boys, one of the greatest punk bands ever. It’s a tale of success and excess—amazing music, legendary antics, epic drug use, and eventual resurrection—that only a true rock and roller could deliver. As a songwriter Chrome's work has been covered by artists such as Guns n Roses, Pearl Jam and the Beastie Boys. He still performs and records with Rocket From The Tombs and Batusis (with Sylvain Sylvain of the New York Dolls).

Mike Hudson will read from Jetsam and Diary of a Punk. The 32 short pieces that make up Jetsam were written and published between 1977 and 2009. His lean and unsentimental prose style is apparent in even the earliest entries here. Diary of A Punk is Hudson's autobiography. He is the founder of the seminal American punk rock group, the Pagans, formed in 1977. His work has appeared in Hustler, the Associated Press, Master Detective, Field & Stream and many other publications here and abroad. He is currently the founding editor and CEO of the Niagara Falls Reporter, a New York tabloid specializing in politics and organized crime.

University of Strangers is Bob Pfeifer's first novel. In a sensational case that made headlines all over the globe, the American student Amanda Knox was convicted of the murder of her British roommate Meredith Kercher, in what Italian authorities described as a sadistic sexual encounter. Pfeifer's novel details the efforts of a secret society, comprised of famous contemporary figures from the worlds of literature, show business and politics, to clear the girl's name. A unique blend of fact and fiction the book is a spellbinding account of the violence, corruption and celebrity worship that characterize much of 21st century life. Pfeifer was Senior Vice President A&R/Epic/Sony Records and President of Hollywood Records. Artists he's worked with include Alice Cooper, Ornette Coleman, The Screaming Trees, also soundtracks like the Crow: City of Angels and Lion King. He is a founding member/songwriter of Human Switchboard and Tabby Chinos.

King Dude is the pseudonym for Seattle artist and musician TJ Cowgill (Teen Cthulhu, Book of Black Earth, Cross, Actual Pain). Formed from the void of spiritual, Satanic folk music in our current age, Cowgill as King Dude has quickly carved his own niche in the world's underground music scene. Comparisons to Death in June, Current 93, and Of the Wand and the Moon (whom released a split 7" with King Dude) run amok, along with comparisons to Guthrie, Dylan, and Leonard Cohen. But there is no direct rip off going on here. "I was writing these songs," says Cowgill, " and I ended up playing them for a friend of mine, who said I reminded her of Current 93, that's when I started listening to bands like that." Truly this music is natural in its inception and form, and speaks of world of Luciferian Light, knowledge and spirituality beyond the confides of otherwise strict monotheistic reasoning. "My music is the music of the world, of nature, of the devil, of love and destruction. I think it speaks to everyone equally no matter who they are or what they believe because the light bringer is in us all, awake or waiting to be awakened." Whatever is going on, King Dude's brand of psych folk has a tendency to evoke a quiet calm that is at once soothing and disheartening.

Her influences range from the creative minds of Ingmar Bergman and David Lynch, to soviets, death, and the end of the world, and her songs conjure sparkling visions in the listener’s mind of other dimensions, a claustrophobic echo-room or a parking garage cathedral.

The three members of Wildildlife (just pronounced Wildlife) are no strangers to the sensation of ridiculously overloaded senses and, as such, they have crafted an album that is evocative of such an experience for their latest full - length, Give In To Live.
Expansive melodies, epically dirgey sludge, rave ups and a huge heaping helping of good ol' brain -bending psychedelia characterize the eight songs on Give In To Live, all while not completely obfuscating the overall hum-ability or pop sensibilities of this wildly experimental rock band. Wildildlife has been tagged with many genres - Heavy Metal, Shoegaze, Stoner, Doom, Drone, Noise - those can only hint at the greater aesthetic they have developed. Their genre traversing efforts are most assuredly studied amalgams showcasing the band's multi-instrumental training with each band member's individual and broad tastes.

Jason Simon, best known for his work as the guitarist and singer for the seminal heavy psych band known as Dead Meadow, releases his first solo record(Tee Pee Records). It is a stripped down and intimate record filled with intricate guitar work and poignant well-thought lyrics. Some songs are filled with dark brooding drones. Others songs leisurely carry the listener down meandering rivers as they slowly develop in their own unhurried way. There are slight shades of Bert Jansch, Leonard Cohen, Sandy Bull, and Townes Van Zandt but only shades as it is most certainly its own thing. It is a record to remind the listener that heavy does not come from loud distortion and huge drums but comes from the depth within the song itself.

A precursory scan of Google results might produce comparisons to MOGWAI or a “heavier” RADIOHEAD, as if it were easy to pin down...

KIT is a super-melodic experimental rock band mainly from Los Angeles, California. They were recently described by Rob Barber of High Places as “a strange intersection where Void meet Incredible String Band”, and this gives some insight into their wonderful muddling of genres. They play fast, short and defiant songs that mess with the ideas of pop music and wayward punk. Maybe they'll start off playing a song straight - sweetness and light abounds - but before you know it everything gets flipped on its head and chased into damaged terrain. KIT songs can typically embrace hardcore rush, pop verse, jagged noise and cheer rally, all within the same moment - nothing but raw energy and instinctive songwriting holding it all together.

The trio of Matthew Reed, Patrick Reed and Kevin Shubak--heretofore known as Mount Carmel--hails from Columbus, Ohio, but if you're expecting lo-fi, greaser's palace pop a la Psychedelic Horseshit or Times New Viking, think again. Mount Carmel is a straight-up blues rock power trio. And by straight-up we mean sans revisionist three-dollar currency, Sub Pop grunge hybridization or ironic posturing. These guys have been weened on a diet almost steadfastly consisting of British blues/rock innovators: Peter Green-era Bluesbreakers, Cream and Ten Years After are immediately recognizable in their sound (in fact, the latter's "Hear Me Calling" is covered on here). This isn't a lark or something these guys are doing between noise projects--it's their life. Good, old-fashioned rock 'n' roll, plain and simple. Some folks never made time for punk, just like you've always snubbed your nose at the drum solo. Hard to believe, right? But just because you didn't live through it the first time doesn't mean you're not doomed to repeat it. The piquancy of '70s-era redbud fusing with the aroma of banana- (or strawberry-) scented paper burning and hanging in the air, the sweet cascade of Ripple hitting the back of your throat, the blurry exotica of Rorer's ubiquitous 714... it's all here, undeniably, unpretentiously and unwittingly realized. In fact, their sound is so genuine, you'll swear you were dead! Or at the very least unborn. Dig it.

Night Horse exploded on to the Los Angeles rock scene in 2008, playing their first live show ever, while mixing their debut EP The Dark Wont Hide You for Tee Pee Records. Since then, Night Horse has caught the ears and eyes of critics and fans alike with their unique ability to blend the classic sounds of hard rock and blues music with a much needed breath of contemporary fresh air. “If Sonic Youth had been immersed in an ocean of Allman Brothers inspiration, or Soundgarden had been steeped in late 60s Fleetwood Mac, then they might have turned out something like this. Night Horse take traditional blues-rock, spark it up with riotously noisy flashes and drag the rhythms through an early-90s grunge experience. Moreover, they’re cohesive, charismatic and compelling.”

Night Horse return with their highly anticipated sophomore effort Perdition Hymns, produced and mixed by Matt Bayles (Pearl Jam, Mastodon, The Sword). Perdition Hymns is a patent demonstration of a group that has quickly become a well-refined song-writing machine. The band has chiseled the six-minute jam style songwriting of The Dark Wont Hide You into the hook-laden gems that comprise Perdition Hymns; with riff driven catchiness and soaring melodies that stick.

Cinder Cone, a two-piece minimalist rock outfit from Los Angeles, emit a thunderous sound. Anyone can attest to this if they have attended a Cinder Cone show, listened to the band’s releases, or even heard a rumbling somewhere near a downtown practice space on the banks of the great LA River. Only two members comprise the band: David plays drums, and Anthony plays guitar and throat. They do not use keyboards, laptops, or any other technical wizardry to create their sound. Their full sound of octopus drumming and innovative fretwork weave together to place the listener on a propulsive freeway one minute only to drop them off in a placid field the next, capping off the journey with an earthquake of drum rolls and electric precision.

the concrete wilds of New Jersey, the salty mists of
the Great Northwest, and the piss and vinegar quahog
country of erce little Rhode Island. They came . . .
they progressed . . . to that great sprawl of glimmer
and grime that is the city of Los Angeles. And they
liked it there. So they formed a band.
A roll call of Human Machines: John Nixon lead gui-
tar, drums, harmonies, tight pants; Max \The Ham-
mer" Berkelhammer drums, keys, banjo, dendrochronol-
ogy; Richie Parmerter bassist, synth-man, cutie-pie;
Byron Kahr guitar, vocals, songwriter, totally legit.
These are the disparate elements that form the City of
Progress. They are a band of men, who make music
for both men and women. It is warm. It is jagged.
It is (despite the profound inuence of Austrian-avant
gardist, Karl Anton Fleck), distinctly American music.
The good kind. The Gram Parsons kind.
Not the Toby Keith kind.

Métal Rouge was formed in 2006 by Helga Fassonaki and Andrew Scott in Auckland, New Zealand with no aim but to open themselves to the spontaneous psych tonalism running through the underbelly of popular music like a vein of pure lightning. Birthed from the rich history of New Zealand underground they began to mold a sound comprised equally of the forward motion of ecstatic jazz and the drugged stasis of NYC loft minimalism circa ’66. Using electric guitar, vocals and amplified santur as their primary instruments, they forged a new vocabulary of unrefined free spiritual music. Relocating to Los Angeles, they toured the US, adding lap steel and pedal steel to their arsenal. Drummer/Trombonist Caitlin M. Mitchell joined in 2009, bringing with her a night/day spectrum ranging from pure brass drone through to aggressive free rock. Related projects include Yek Koo (Helga solo), Nest (Andrew & Nigel Wright), Un Ciego (Andrew solo), Huzun (Andrew & Tim Coster), Dogwiper (Caitlin, Ged Gengras & Seth Kasselman), and Low Light Situations (Caitlin, Ged Gengras, Jake White & Seth Kasselman). Métal Rouge have releases on Root Strata, Not Not Fun, Stunned, Digitalis, and Emerald Cocoon (previously Seymour Records).

"5 Producers with many different styles. Foniks, Alcendor, Accrete, Abstract Butta Fingas and New Systems Of Knowledge, have set a high bar in the alternative L.A. hip hop movement with their debut compilation, "Left Handed Acquisitions."

10 Tracks in all, some sample driven, some purely new compositions, but all able to keep your attention one way or the other. From NSOK’s drum driven "Carandiru Lockdown" to ABF’s elastic bass riffs on "Sugar Cubes in Zero Gravity," the listener will be in a world of music where classically trained ears or conventionally guided minds may find slightly askew but refreshing non-the same.
